Argentine Court Halts Demolition of Historic Luna Park Stadium

Argentine Court Halts Demolition of Historic Luna Park Stadium

Buenos Aires, April 7 (NA) -- The Justice system has once again provisionally suspended any attempt to demolish the Luna Park stadium, reviving the controversy over the future of this historic venue located in the City of Buenos Aires. The measure was ordered by the III Chamber of the Administrative and Tax Litigation Court, which immediately halted the works, considering that an eventual demolition could cause irreversible damage. According to the Argentine News Agency, the judges argued that if the building's destruction proceeds, the situation would not be reversible even if the project is later rejected. The ruling came after presentations by constitutionalist Andrés Gil Domínguez and organizations like 'Enough Demolitions,' 'City Foundation,' and the 'Observatory of the Right to the City,' which challenged the intervention on the property. The project under discussion involves demolishing a significant part of the current stadium to build a new one with greater capacity and dimensions, which would involve more than 11,600 square meters and preserve only a minor portion of the original structure. In this sense, one of the central points of the ruling was the protection of the heritage value of Luna Park, which is a National Historic Monument and has a level of structural protection that limits substantial modifications. The magistrates emphasized that judicial intervention must occur before the damage is done, maintaining that the demolition has 'irreversible effects' on cultural heritage. The judicial conflict surrounding the stadium has been ongoing for months: a first suspension measure was issued in December 2025, then advances were permitted in another instance in March 2026, and now the process has been halted again. For the time being, the demolition is suspended, while the Justice system must resolve the core of the case, which could lead to a modification of the project or its definitive cancellation. The case keeps various sectors on edge, as Luna Park is not only an emblematic stadium but also a symbol of Argentine cultural history, a stage for sporting events, concerts, and political acts for decades.
